Telephone scam hits Fayette County
FAYETTE COUNTY, Ga. -- The Fayette County Sheriff's Office received two reports of phone scams over the weekend.
In both cases, the caller told the would-be victim that he worked for the sheriff's office. He said the victim had an active arrest warrant for missing jury duty; to avoid being arrested, the victim was asked to put $240 on a prepaid debit card.
The sheriff's office would like to remind Fayette County residents that this is a scam -- no respectable agency will ever ask for immediate payment via a prepaid card.
Anyone who receives a similar phone call is asked to hang up and dial 911.
