Telephone scam hits Fayette County

Telephone scam hits Fayette County

FAYETTE COUNTY, Ga. -- The Fayette County Sheriff's Office received two reports of phone scams over the weekend.

In both cases, the caller told the would-be victim that he worked for the sheriff's office. He said the victim had an active arrest warrant for missing jury duty; to avoid being arrested, the victim was asked to put $240 on a prepaid debit card.

The sheriff's office would like to remind Fayette County residents that this is a scam -- no respectable agency will ever ask for immediate payment via a prepaid card.

Anyone who receives a similar phone call is asked to hang up and dial 911.

(WXIA) -- You'll see less construction than usual on Atlanta's interstates and highways this weekend -- and you have the Braves to thank for it.

Due to Friday's home opener at Turner Field, as well as spring break, the Georgia Department of Transportation has suspended its typical weekend roadwork.

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. -- A driver faces a long list of charges after leading police on an erratic chase through Peachtree City on March 31.

It began shortly after 3:00 p.m. with an attempted traffic stop. A Peachtree City motorcycle officer tried to pull over a car with two men inside at the intersection of Highway 74 and Crosstown Drive. The driver ignored the officer and pulled into a nearby parking lot, where the passenger jumped out of the car.

Peachtree City Police Lt. Mark Brown said the driver, 54-year-old Darryl Lambert of College Park, sped away through a construction zone where people were working. Police deployed stop sticks on Highway 74 and deflated the car's tires, but Lambert continued to drive more than 80 miles per hour as the tires disintegrated.

GDOT to limit roadwork for 2 weekends

(WXIA) -- Here's some good news for spring breakers and Atlanta Braves fans: road construction will be limited for the next two weekends.

The Georgia Department of Transportation announced Wednesday it will close fewer interstate lanes than usual from midnight on Friday, Apr. 3 to 5 a.m. on Monday, Apr. 6. The construction break is meant to accommodate drivers who are heading into or out of Atlanta for spring break and Easter weekend.

Lane closures will also be limited from 10 p.m. on Friday, Apr. 10 to 5 a.m. on Monday, Apr. 13, for the Braves' opening weekend at Turner Field.

Traffic throughout Georgia is expected to be heavy both weekends, and drivers are asked to be cautious.

"Also, incident management or emergency maintenance-related lane closures could become necessary on any time on any route," GDOT director of construction Jeff Baker said.
