Pike Nurseries to host free 'Houseplants for a Healthy 2015' class

ATLANTA -- Not only do houseplants bring in much needed color during the bare winter months, but they also play an important health role by improving air quality! Research has revealed that certain common houseplants can actually create a cleaner environment by releasing oxygen and removing contaminants – like formaldehyde, benzene and ammonia – from a room’s air efficiently.

To help customers create a cleaner, greener and healthier home, Pike Nurseries is hosting a FREE “Houseplants for a Healthy 2015” customer class at all garden center locations onSaturday, Jan. 24 at 9 a.m.

During the informational seminar, guests will learn about houseplant health benefits, popular plant options and proper care guidelines. With expert tips from Pike Nurseries, guests can keep their homes healthy and “green” all year-round!

Christian City celebrates 50 years

UNION CITY, Ga. -- Christian City will celebrate its 50th anniversary next month.

The south Fulton County facility houses both seniors and children. Its famous Children's Village has cared for more than 1,000 abused, abandoned and neglected children over the years.

Christian City's 50th Anniversary Celebration will be Thursday, Feb. 26 at 6:30 p.m. at the Delta Flight Museum near Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Christian City president and CEO Bob Crutchfield said the evening will feature presentations, hors d'oeuvres, music and more.

10 north Ga. students chosen for Disney Dreamers Academy

10 north Ga. students chosen for Disney Dreamers Academy

(WXIA) -- Ten high school students from the Atlanta area are among only 100 teens nationwide to be selected for the 2015 Disney Dreamers Academy with Steve Harvey and ESSENCE Magazine.

The winners were selected from among nearly 10,000 applicants nationwide. They will travel to Walt Disney World Resort in March to participate in a prestigious educational and mentoring program.

Dreamers, as program participants are called, will learn life skills such as communication techniques and networking, and will explore possible career paths.

The weekend roadwork is spreading

(WXIA) -- As 2015 rolls on, Georgia Department of Transportation crews will roll too -- to sites across metro Atlanta, where they will work on weekend road projects. (At least it will be sunny!)

This weekend, drivers are encouraged to avoid travel on the west side of Interstate 20 and the east side of I-285, if possible. Delays and lane closures are expected in both areas. All work is weather permitting.

Some of the scheduled projects include:

Cobb County
* 2 eastbound lanes of I-285 will be closed at I-75 Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. for bridge joint repairs.

DeKalb/Fulton counties
* 3 northbound lanes of I-285 will be closed between I-20 and Ga. 400 from 7 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for sign structure work.

Family members concerned about wife of police chief's long-term prognosis

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. – Family members of the wife of Peachtree City's police chief are concerned about her long-term prognosis.

Peachtree City Police Chief William McCollom told authorities that he accidentally shot his wife, Margaret, early Jan. 1 as he moved his service gun in their bed.
