Humane Society holding pet adoption weekend

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. -- This weekend is National Pet Adoption Weekend, and the Fayette County Humane Society is making it easy for residents to bring home a new cat or dog.

The Humane Society will hold a pet adoption fair at the Peachtree City PetSmart this weekend. Every pet adopted will net the Humane Society a $35 donation from PetSmart Charities.

Animals will be available for adoption from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2; from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3; and from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 4.

The Peachtree City PetSmart is located at 2701 Highway 54.

Firefighters' haunted house begins final weekend

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. -- The Peachtree City Fire Department's Haunted House and Haunted Trail will be open this weekend, giving local families their last opportunity to scare up some fun before Halloween.

The House and Trail are located at Fire Station 81 on Paschall Road, near The Avenue. They will be open on Friday, Oct. 26 and Saturday, Oct. 27.

Admission to the House and Trail is $10. For children who are still too young for scares, there will also be a House of Clues they can enter for $5.

Money raised by the House and Trail goes to the Peachtree City Optimist Club and the fire department.

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. -- The Fayette County Humane Society is preparing to host Fore the Paws, its first annual golf tournament.

Fore the Paws will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 7 at Braelinn Golf Club.

Proceeds from the event will go to the Humane Society's spay/neuter program. Some of the money raised will also help provide veterinary care for rescued cats and dogs.

Tickets are $85 each and include a green fee, range balls, golf cart use, breakfast and a lunchtime awards ceremony. They will be sold through Wednesday, Oct. 31.

Fore the Paws will also include a raffle that is open to participants and non-participants.

Check your child's car seat for free

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. -- The Peachtree City Police Department and Fayette County Safe Kids Organization will host a free child car seat safety check Wednesday afternoon.

To have your child's car seat checked, stop by the parking lot of the Ethan Allen on Market Place Connector from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Appointments are not necessary, but parents are advised to allow about 30 minutes for the check to be performed.

Anyone who cannot make the event but would still like a car seat inspection can call the police department at 770-487-8866 to schedule an appointment.

ATLANTA -- Let Pike Nurseries help you add some fall décor to your home.

This weekend, all Atlanta-area Pike locations will host a make-and-take pumpkin planter seminar. The class will teach participants how to create a perfect autumn centerpiece using pumpkins, soil and a variety of plants.

The seminar will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20. The cost is $30 per person, which includes a pumpkin planter to take home.

Local author to sign books at 5K

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. -- Runners who attend the upcoming Promise Place 5K in Peachtree City also have a chance to meet local author Morgan Summerfield.

Summerfield will sell some of her paintings and sign copies of her latest book, Blood and Magnolias, at the event, which raises money to end domestic violence.

The Promise Place 5K will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 28 at Peachtree City's City Hall. Learn more about the race.

Pike Nurseries to host gardening classes, sale

ATLANTA -- Fall, the prime planting season, is right around the corner, and Pike Nurseries has everything homeowners need to beautify their yards.

On Saturday, Sept. 15, all Pike locations in metro Atlanta will host a free fall gardening class. Nursery experts will take attendees through the process of picking out fall plants and caring for them.

The class will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. and is free to attend.

Pike's Gardenfest event, where customers can enjoy complimentary refreshments while surveying a variety of plants and yard decorations, will be held on Thursday, Sept. 27 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Much of the merchandise will be on sale during Gardenfest.
