5K to benefit abused women

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. -- Come to Peachtree City this weekend to race for a good cause.

Wellspring Living will host the 7th annual Race to Restore 5K: Run for Her Future on Saturday, Sept. 15.

All proceeds from the run will benefit comprehensive healing programs for women and girls who have been trafficked or sexually abused.

Runners can participate alone or in a group of 12 or more. The largest group will receive a prize from race organizers.

In addition, participants can enter a $5 raffle for a chance to win a Massage Envy gift card, a California Pizza Kitchen Kids Package, tickets to see the Gwinnett Gladiators in action and more.

Registration for the Race to Restore will begin at 7 a.m., with the race scheduled to start at 8 a.m. Visit active.com to sign up.

Sam's Club offering free diabetes screenings

Sam's Club offering free diabetes screenings

ATLANTA -- Several Sam's Club Pharmacy locations throughout metro Atlanta will offer free diabetes and vision screenings this weekend.

The screenings will be held Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and are valued at more than $150. They include glucose, A1C, vision, blood pressure and BMI tests.

"Knowing the links between risk factors, choices and solutions prepares our members to better manage or even prevent diabetes," Sam's Club Health and Wellness senior VP Jill Turner-Mitchael said in a statement.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say about 1.9 million new cases of diabetes are diagnosed every year. If this trend continues, one out of every three U.S. adults will have diabetes by 2050.

Diabetes is also the leading cause of new cases of blindness in U.S. adults, according to the CDC.

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. -- The second annual Cancer Wellness Walk for Piedmont Fayette Hospital will be held next month in Peachtree City.

Proceeds from the walk will benefit the Fayetteville hospital's Cancer Wellness Center.

The event will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8 at Drake Field.

Register online or by mail. The cost is $20 for adults or $30 for one adult and one child.

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. -- Boney James is the next jazz artist to visit the Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater in Peachtree City.

The concert will begin at 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 31. Tickets can be purchased through Ticket Alternative or The Fred's box office.

Watch party for local Olympian Kelley O'Hara

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. -- Fayette County residents will come together Thursday to cheer for one of their own -- a local girl who just so happens to be an Olympian.

Kelley O'Hara grew up in Fayetteville and graduated from Starr's Mill High School. She is a member of the U.S. Olympic women's soccer team, which will compete against Japan for the gold medal Thursday afternoon.

A watch party for O'Hara and the rest of the women's soccer players, including the Atlanta Beat's Carli Lloyd, will be held at 2:30 p.m. at Mike & C's restaurant in Peachtree City. The gold medal soccer match is scheduled to begin at 2:45 p.m., Atlanta time.

Everyone in the community is invited to attend and show their support for O'Hara.

Free guitar lessons offered to at-risk youth

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. -- A Peachtree City non-profit will offer free beginner guitar lessons to foster children and other at-risk youth.

Guitars Not Guns will hold its first music class at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 23.

Classes will be held at the Stage Music Academy. Guitars are provided. Visit the organization's website to apply for a space; class sizes are limited.

Guitars Not Guns is also looking for volunteer teachers from Fayetteville and Peachtree City to lead the classes.

The Stage Music Academy is located at 401 Dividend Drive.
