PEACHTREE CITY | Rep. wants schools trained in diabetes

ATLANTA -- State Rep. Matt Ramsey has introduced legislation that would require school systems to have at least two personnel trained in diabetes treatment.

The Peachtree City Republican says he became aware of the issue last year after his child was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

The legislation would require state departments to develop guidelines, including recognizing and treating hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia; understanding the appropriate actions to take when blood glucose levels are out of the target range; and understanding physician instructions.

The personnel would also be required to administer tests to check blood glucose levels and recognize situations that require emergency assistance.

Additionally, the bill would allow diabetic students to check and regulate their own blood glucose levels with permission from a parent.
