PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. -- More than two months after accidentally shooting his former wife while she slept, Peachtree City Police Chief William McCollom has stepped down.

"It was my pleasure to serve with the men and women of the Peachtree City Police Department in the capacity of assistant chief and chief," McCollom said in a statement posted to the city's website. "The city of Peachtree City has every reason to be proud of their police department as the personnel are both competent and professional. I wish each of them the best as they continue to serve the citizens."

School: Bomb threat at McIntosh High School just a drill

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. -- A spokesman from the principal's office at McIntosh High Schood tells 11Alive News the bomb threat police were investigating Monday morning was part of a drill.

During the drill, officers searched the school with bomb-sniffing dogs, according to a Fayette County Public Schools spokesperson.

The building was not evacuated, but students were kept in their classrooms during the search.

Police: NY juveniles suspected in fake 911 call

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. – Authorities have say two juveniles in New York are suspected of triggering a SWAT team response in Peachtree City.

On Friday, a SWAT team responded to a call of a person saying that he had shot his mother, tied up his father and brother, and was going to shoot the police upon their arrival.

After several hours, police realized the call was fake -- another dangerous instance of the practice known as "swatting."

"The dispatcher reported shots in the background which made officers very, very concerned and we had to deploy resources appropriately," said Lt. Mark Brown of the Peachtree City Police Department.

Investigators were able to track the call to an apartment in the Bronx, N.Y., and found two juvenile suspects. New York Police Department Detectives were notified and are now interviewing the juveniles.

Peachtree City hit by car, air-lifted to hospital


PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. -- Peachtree City Police are investigating a collision that sent a teenager to the hospital.

It happened at Highway 54 and Peachtree Pkwy. Friday afternoon, a teen was hit by a vehicle in the busy intersection. Police tell 11Alive News the teen has been transported to the hospital by rescue helicopter.

Several surface streets impacted by weekend roadwork

Several surface streets impacted by weekend roadwork

(WXIA) -- Interstate 20 will bear the brunt of this weekend's roadwork, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation.

Drivers are asked to avoid nonessential travel on I-20, as road projects will require lane closures that will likely result in delays.

A number of surface streets will also be impacted by construction crews.

As always, all work is weather permitting. Get this weekend's forecast.

Cobb/Fulton counties: I-285
2 northbound lanes will be closed between Bolton and South Atlanta roads from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for concrete rehabilitation.

Coweta County: I-85
1 southbound lane will be closed at Sharpsburg-McCullum Road from 9 p.m. Friday to 12 p.m. Monday for barrier wall installation.

Weekend roadwork: More sign and bridge work

(WXIA) -- Once again, drivers in the Atlanta area are asked to avoid non-essential travel on Interstate 285 this weekend.

Georgia Department of Transportation road crews will work on several stretches of roads and highways throughout the area Friday night through Monday morning. Many of the projects will require lane closures, which could result in delays.

As always, all work is weather permitting. See this weekend's forecast.

Scheduled projects include:

Coweta County
1 southbound lane of I-85 will be closed at Sharpsburg-McCullum Road from 9 p.m. Friday to 12 p.m. Monday for barrier wall installation.

DeKalb County
2 northbound lanes of I-285 will be closed between Covington Highway and I-20 from 7:30 p.m. Saturday to 7:30 a.m. Sunday for sign structure work.

Peachtree City Police Chief shooting turned over to D.A.

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. -- More than a month after the police chief in Peachtree City called 911 to say he'd shot his wife, the case is now before the District Attorney. The GBI has been spearheading the investigation and confirmed the case was turned over to the Feyette County District Attorney Friday afternoon.

According to the GBI, Chief William E. McCollom called 911 on January 1st after he accidentally shot his wife. According to that call, he shot her in the back while they were in the couple's bedroom. Maragret McCollom was originally hospitalized in serious condition, but improved and was released January 12.

She told GBI investigators she was asleep when the shooting occurred and could not provide any more information. She did state she believes is was all an accident.
