Fludd Scholarship available to students

TYRONE, Ga. -- Rep. Virgil Fludd (D-Tyrone) has renewed his Fludd Scholarship Award for high school students.

The monetary award is given annually to exceptional teens from Fayette and south Fulton counties, the areas Fludd represents.

"The scholarship program was created to recognize the academic performance and community service of students in the south metro area," Fludd said in a statement. "We are delighted to be able to continue this program and even more excited about helping these young people with their college careers."

More information about applying for the scholarship will be available soon at virgilfludd.org.

Money for the scholarship program comes from the annual Virgil Fludd Scholarship Golf Tournament. This year's tournament will be held Monday, Oct. 14 at Flat Creek Golf Club in Peachtree City.

3 vying for Rome schools superintendent post

ROME, Ga. -- Three finalists for Rome City Schools superintendent have been named as the district looks to replace outgoing superintendent Gayland Cooper, who is set to retire next month.

The finalists are James Arnold, superintendent of Pelham City Schools; Jeff Bearden, superintendent of Fayette County Schools; and Bill McCown, superintendent of Gordon County Schools.

School board officials have two weeks to deliberate and come to a decision. The new superintendent must be named by Nov. 30.

Local author to sign books at 5K

Local author to sign books at 5K

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. -- Runners who attend the upcoming Promise Place 5K in Peachtree City also have a chance to meet local author Morgan Summerfield.

Summerfield will sell some of her paintings and sign copies of her latest book, Blood and Magnolias, at the event, which raises money to end domestic violence.

The Promise Place 5K will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 28 at Peachtree City's City Hall. Learn more about the race.
