FAYETTEVILLE, Ga. -- Ten seniors at four Fayette County high schools have been selected as semifinalists for the prestigious National Merit Scholarship Program.

These talented students will now compete against 16,000 of their peers nationwide, including 426 in Georgia, in the 57th annual scholarship program, which awards about $34 million to the country's best and brightest every year.

To become a semifinalists, a high school junior must earn an exemplary score on the PSAT. Upon becoming a senior, the student must perform a number of steps to be named a finalist, including filling out a detailed application, writing a personal essay and earning high grades.

The 2012 National Merit Scholarship winners will be announced next spring.
