Local author to sign books at 5K

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. -- Runners who attend the upcoming Promise Place 5K in Peachtree City also have a chance to meet local author Morgan Summerfield.

Summerfield will sell some of her paintings and sign copies of her latest book, Blood and Magnolias, at the event, which raises money to end domestic violence.

The Promise Place 5K will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 28 at Peachtree City's City Hall. Learn more about the race.

ATLANTA -- The 2012 London Paralympics begin Wednesday, and several Georgians are hoping to bring home the gold at the Games.

Richard Browne, 21, Athletics
Browne is a native of Jackson, Miss., and now attends Morehouse College in Atlanta. He suffered a below-the-knee amputation after an accident in 2009, but quickly bounced back to become a Paralympian. Browne will compete in the 100m, 4x100m and high jump. He won silver in the high jump and bronze in the 100m at the 2012 Paralympic Trials.

7 Fayette students named to Atlanta Youth Wind Symphony

FAYETTE COUNTY, Ga. -- Seven talented young musicians from three Fayette County high schools have been named to the 2012-13 Atlanta Youth Wind Symphony.

The students were among 85 selected from more than 300 applicants. The Atlanta Youth Wind Symphony has given metro Atlanta's brightest talents an opportunity to shine since 1988.

Piedmont Fayette Hospital announces new Executive Director of Community and Public Relations

Fayetteville, Ga. (August 9, 2012) – Piedmont Fayette Hospital announces Debbie Britt as the new executive director of community and public relations. Britt, who will assume her new role in mid-September, will serve as the community relations liaison between the hospital, the physician network and the community.

With primary responsibility for public relations, communications and community outreach, Britt also will oversee the hospital’s auxiliary volunteer program as well as Piedmont Fayette’s Sixty Plus Older Adult Services. She brings more than 30 years of professional experience in corporate communications, public and community relations, and non-profit management to her new role at Piedmont Fayette.

Young judoko sets his sights on Rio Olympics

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. -- Although the 2012 Olympics are over, the spirit of the Games still burns bright for a young judo star from Peachtree City.

Joshua Briggs hopes to represent the U.S. at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics -- and if this past July is any indication, he is well on his way to doing just that.

Briggs, 14, placed first in the 2012 Junior Olympic International Judo Competition on July 22 in Dallas, Texas. A week later, he won the top prize in the juvenile 48 kg division at the Junior U.S. Open Judo Championship in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Briggs is ranked No. 1 in the country in his weight division. At the Junior U.S. Open, he beat his opponent in less than 25 seconds; the other judoko was ranked No. 1 in Europe while living in his native Ukraine.
