College expo coming to south side

FAIRBURN, Ga. -- Students in Atlanta's southern suburbs will have the chance to attend a local college fair at the end of the month.

The Go to College Expo will be held at the Country Inn & Suites in Fairburn on Saturday, Jan. 26.

College recruiters will be on hand to answer questions about financial aid and the schools they represent. The fair is geared toward high school juniors and seniors, as well as adults and veterans who wish to return to school.

The expo will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Country Inn & Suites is located at 7815 Senoia Road, just off Interstate 85.

McIntosh HS lacrosse players to pick up Christmas trees

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. -- Members of the McIntosh High School boys' lacrosse team are willing to pick up and recycle your used Christmas tree.

The lacrosse players will retrieve trees from Peachtree City homes and businesses through Feb. 2.

In return, McIntosh High asks that participants make a donation to the lacrosse team.

If you would like to recycle your Christmas tree yourself, you can participate in Bring One for the Chipper.

School system responds to Sandy Hook ES tragedy

FAYETTE COUNTY, Ga. -- The Fayette County Public School System released a statement in the wake of last week's shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

In the note, which can be read here, the school system explains that it "is deeply saddened" by the massacre and "mourns for the families and community of Newtown, Connecticut."

It outlines the measures that the system has taken to ensure the safety of all students and teachers.

"Our school system was the first in Georgia to create an emergency preparedness plan following the events of Columbine," the letter reads. "The plan covers any potential emergency that might happen, including an intrusion."

99% of Fayette students pass Ga. High School Writing Test

FAYETTE COUNTY, Ga. -- Nearly 99 percent of high school juniors and seniors in Fayette County passed the Georgia High School Writing Test in 2012.

Fayette's 98.7 percent is much higher than Georgia's 93 percent, up from 91 percent in 2011 and 88 percent in 2007, when the more rigorous test was rolled out.

Students must pass the annual writing assessment to receive a high school diploma. A perfect score is 350; a student must earn at least 200 points to pass. They may take the test multiple times during their junior and senior years.

A breakdown for each Fayette County high school is as follows:

Career mentors needed for McIntosh HS students

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. -- McIntosh High School is looking for volunteers for its Chief Connections program.

Chief Connections is a membership initiative that pairs McIntosh students with mentors and coaches to guide them on to possible career paths.

The school needs adults to sign up as career mentors. The mentors are paired up with students who are interested in pursuing careers in their field of expertise.

As a mentor, an adult reaches out to students twice a week to set goals and discuss upcoming opportunities to make sure the goals are met.

Highlights include a silent auction with great prizes, free cocoa for children and a visit from Santa Claus himself.
