AJC Peachtree Road Race T-shirt design contest open

ATLANTA -- Calling all artists: the AJC Peachtree Road Race T-shirt design contest is now accepting entries.

Designers have until Friday, Feb. 28 to submit their works of art. All entries will be whittled down to five finalists, which will be unveiled on ajc.com/peachtree on Saturday, Mar. 15.

No one will see the winning design until race day, when it will adorn tens of thousands of finishers' T-shirts.

"The AJC Peachtree Road Race T-shirt design contest is a great way to showcase the work of our local artists, and we are always impressed with the entries we receive," Atlanta Track Club interim executive director Sue Payne said in a statement.

Whoever wins the contest receives $1,000, while each of the four finalists gets $100.

ATLANTA -- Don't be alarmed if you see a whole bunch of people running down Georgia 400 this weekend.

The Pay the Last Toll road race will be held Sunday, Nov. 17 at 8:30 a.m., and gives athletes one last opportunity to see the infamous toll booths before they are demolished.

Runners will begin at the Glenridge Connector in Sandy Springs and run south to Phipps Plaza. When they reach the toll booths, they will throw in their final 50 cents. All proceeds will go to charity.

Northbound lanes of Ga. 400 will be closed for the race from 5 a.m. to 11 a.m. Sunday.

Georgia Department of Transportation crews will also spend part of the weekend tearing down a MARTA pedestrian bridge on southbound Ga. 400.

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. -- The Peachtree City Police Department will host its National Night Out on Tuesday, Oct. 1 from 6 p.m to 8 p.m.

National Night Out is a program designed to strengthen the bond between police departments and the communities they serve.

A number of agencies will attend Peachtree City's event, which will be held at Drake Field near City Hall. Residents will also get the opportunity to see a fire department ladder truck, police vehicles and a helicopter up close.

Other activities include a scavenger hunt and prizes.

Last year's National Night Out was held in 15,000 communities across the U.S., Canada and military bases worldwide.

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. -- FCA Endurance Fayette County will host the 2013 Tour of Faith run and bike ride in Peachtree City next month.

The event will be held Saturday, Aug. 10 at J.C. Booth Middle School. Registration opens at 7 a.m., with the fun scheduled to begin at 8 a.m.

Tour of Faith includes a series of bike rides to choose from, as well as 5K and 10K run/walks, on Peachtree City's multi-use paths.

The cost is $40 for bicycle rides and $30 to run. Register by Thursday, Aug. 1 to save $5 and be guaranteed a T-shirt.

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. -- Registration is now open for the 2013 Peachtree City Classic 5K and 15K.

The event will be held Saturday, Oct. 19 at the Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater.

Early registration is $25 for the men's and women's 5Ks and $35 for the 15K. Prices go up after Aug. 19; as this is the city's most popular race, runners are encouraged to sign up soon.

McIntosh HS holding dance camp

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. -- McIntosh High School's Chiefette Dance Team will host a mini-camp for budding dancers next month.

The camp is open to girls in Pre-K through 8th grade and will teach skills in ballet, jazz, hip-hop, high kick and pom dancing.

Camp runs July 15-18 from 9 a.m. to noon daily. Registration is $100 for the first child and $85 for each sibling; sign up no later than this Wednesday, June 26 to be guaranteed a T-shirt.

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. -- Registration is underway for the 2013 Peachtree International and SuperSprint Triathlon.

This year's race will be held Saturday, May 18. The course begins and ends at Drake Field.

The International Distance Triathlon consists of a .93-mile swim, 25-mile bike ride and 6.2-mile run. There is also a SuperSprint option with a 300-yard swim, 8-mile bike ride and 2-mile run.
