Heat, smog, thunderstorms for Metro Atlanta on Friday

ATLANTA -- Hot weather continues to bake Metro Atlanta and the Southeastern states as everyone hustles to find a way to stay cool.

Continued hot and more humid weather spreading into Georgia from the Gulf Coast could bring pop-up thunderstorms to the area Friday afternoon into Friday evening. Any storms that come up will likely be slow-moving and drench the areas affected. Those storms would also likely have vivid lightning and small hail.

As a result, the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center has placed much of Georgia under a "Slight Risk" area for heavy thunderstorms for Friday.

A Code Orange Smog Alert is also in effect for Friday for Metro Atlanta. People who have breathing difficulties are advised to stay indoors, especially late in the day when smog concentrations are at their highest.

Temperatures through the next week are expected to run in the mid-to-high 90s, with lows in the upper 60s. There's a chance of summer pop-up thunderstorms each afternoon across parts of the area.
